On Saturday, August 1st, a 23-year-old man from Guinea was seriously injured when he was shot eight times during a police operation by a special operations unit in front of the Bonn refugee accommodation in Bonn-Endenich. One shot hit the victim in the neck and narrowly missed his spine. The Düsseldorf SEK was responsible for firing the shots, a police force noted to have used excessive force against people with an immigrant background in the past.
We demand a transparent investigation into this incident, as it appears disproportionate that a large contingent of police, including a special operations unit, would have had no option but to fire eight shots against one individual armed only with knives, who was also mentally unstable and injured by a fall.
Although this is an extreme case, it is but one example of a failed asylum system in which people who have endured arduous and often traumatic flight experiences are held in mass accommodation without access to adequate mental health care. There they remain long periods in uncertain limbo while their asylum procedure drags on, sometimes for years.
We want to express our solidarity with the people who have to abandon their homes because of war, terror, hunger, poverty, persecution and discrimination, and seek their fortune in an uncertain distant land.
Undocumented migrants are also human beings – Sarifou Diallo is a human being.
No person is illegal – we demand the right to residency for all!
Come to the demonstration on Saturday, August 22nd at 2 pm at the Kaiserplatz (near central station) in Bonn!
