Report finds sexual abuse, attempted suicides of refugee children in Australian concentration camp

Aerial view of Nauru

After weeks of anticipation, the Abbott Government just released the findings of an  inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse in the Nauru island concentration camp for refugees. The truly disturbing findings serve as further evidence that Nauru is no place for anyone – especially children. Yet our government continues to defend the Nauru detention centre as an appropriate place to lock up children. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton needs to get the kids out now. Add your name to a petition calling for the release of all children and their families from detention.

It's inconceivable that the Minister and Department of Immigration still consider Nauru to be a safe and viable place to detain children and families, in light of the Human Rights Commission's Forgotten Children report and now, the findings of the Moss Inquiry.

The Moss Inquiry found that children as young as 11 years old had attempted suicide and self-harmed. Of the three allegations of rape, the inquiry found one of them involved a child. What's more, the report found that incidents of sexual and physical assaults are likely to go under-reported, due to family or cultural reasons.

The distressing findings only confirm what we have always known – Nauru is not safe for children and their families.

Despite the Government's obstinate refusal to acknowledge the harm that prolonged detention is causing children, there's no doubt the revelations from the past couple of months have damaged their case for cruelty.

GetUp members and our allies have continually fought for the release of all children from detention. Now's the time to pile on the pressure, right when the Government is receiving heat over their mistreatment of children and women on Nauru.
