DNS problems of indymedia.org subdomains

From approximately 1:30 pm to noon of the 14th of February all indymedia.org domains were unreachable due to technical problems. The reason was a DNS problem. In cases like this Indymedia linksunten can be found at https://yser.mayfirst.org.

If you open a website you usually enter an URL (actually: URI) in the address bar of your browser. In the case of Indymedia linksunten this is linksunten.indymedia.org but yser.mayfirst.org does work as well. Both URLs point to the same IP address: 209.51.172.10.

Before you can open a website the URL needs to be converted to an IP address. This conversion is handled by DNS servers. To ensure that this important function does not fail there are always at lest two DNS servers responsible for each URL – this is true for indymedia.org and at the same time for every indymedia.org subdomains like linksunten.indymedia.org, too.

The primary DNS server was down because of a faulty hard disk drive. After the primary DNS server was down the DNS zone expired. As a consequence, the secondary DNS server was temporarily configured as primary DNS server.

We suggest to bookmark https://yser.mayfirst.org for sitations like this. This way, you can still open Indymedia linksunten, even if the DNS conversion of indymedia.org is unavailable. You can enter the chat not only via https://linksunten.indymedia.org/chat but also directrly via https://chat.koumbit.net/, channel #linksunten.
