By KebbaJeffang - President-elect Adama Barrow, while addressing delegations from Brikama, Tallinding and other communities, said the December Presidential election has taught both himself and Outgoing President Yahya Jammeh numerous lessons on matters that are very important to note.
He said this at the Kairaba Beach Hotel on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 when these groups of men and women paid him a courtesy call after his election victory as president of the Gambia.
Elaborating on one of the lessons learnt by the outgoing president, he said it is his realisation that power belongs to the people and that it is them who, through the vote, determine whoever is to steer their affairs. He said this was done through a very transparent and fair election.
“My own lesson is that it has now become very clear to me that I must serve people who bestowed their trust and confidence in me within the ambit of the law,” he added.
He said from now on it would be very difficult in the Gambia for someone to rule in an undemocratic way without regard to good governance and the rule of law as Gambians are now conscious of their power to remove anyone who fails to serve them.
President-elect Barrow said although there is this post election impasse which will soon be resolved peacefully, the election was without doubt very free and fair and even considerd to be one of the most transparent on the continent.
He urged Gambians to rally behind him and his team to take Gambia on the democratic course.
Meanwhile, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, who was also present, thanked people for seeing and deciding in the best interest of the country. He said the country is finally independent on the 1st December, 2016 and urged for all hands to be put on deck to maintain that independence.
